Dr. Tisa M. McGhee has devoted her life’s work towards improving the quality of life of Miami-Dade residents. Dr.
McGhee has served as Associate Professor at Barry University’s Ellen Whiteside McDonnell School of Social Work since
the fall of 2010. She teaches trauma-informed social work practice, social systems, research, leadership, and public
policy courses in the Masters in Social Work (MSW) program. She leads the innovative “Promoting Wellness in
Marginalized Communities” initiative within the school’s Center for Human Rights and Social Justice. At the core of
all of her work, Dr. McGhee builds community systems capability using engaging and empowering techniques. Her
advanced degrees include both a Bachelor and a Masters of Arts in the field of Clinical Psychology, a Masters in Social
Work, and a Doctor of Philosophy degree with a concentration in macro organizational capacity in Social Work. Dr.
McGhee is a member of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW), the Network for Social Work
Management, and the National Association of Black Social Workers.
It is Dr. McGhee’s same dedication and commitment to public service she shares with current District 3 County
Commissioner and Board Chairwoman, Audrey Edmonson, that prompted the Commissioner to enthusiastically
endorse Dr. McGhee’s candidacy to succeed her on the Commission, declaring - “I can think of no other individual who
is as attuned to the needs of hard-working families as Dr. Tisa McGhee. She is a vigorous public advocate, a tireless
and tenacious fighter, and one of the most selfless and caring individuals I know. There is no doubt whatsoever that
she will make a great County Commissioner, and I ask all the residents of District 3 to support her candidacy.”
Dr. McGhee is ready to bring a fresh perspective and leadership style to tackle the pressing issues affecting Miami-
Dade County resident’s quality of lifelike, affordable housing, adequate public transportation, high paying, quality jobs
for all our residents, safety and climate change.
Dr. McGhee is a member of historically African-American women’s organizations like Alpha Alpha Beta Omega Chapter
of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and she is an executive committee member of the Miami-Biscayne Bay (FL) Chapter
of the Links, Inc. Dr. McGhee is a board member of both the Black Affairs Advisory Board (BAAB) and the Miami-Dade
Economic Advocacy Trust (MDEAT), in which she serves to inform and address education and social justice concerns
of the African American community. She most recently received the “Miami’s Most Influential and Powerful Black
Professionals of 2020 Award” and the “2018 Top Educator Award” from Legacy Magazine, she was a Policy Fellow
2015-2017 with the Network for Social Work Management, and she is the Chief Executive Officer of her own consulting
firm, Mc3 Consulting Inc. (Mc3). Her firm aims to improve organizational effectiveness using assessment, planning,
training, and evaluation, by working with individual nonprofits, community agencies, for-profit organizations, and
funders in support of the improvement of struggling communities.
Dr. McGhee is a candidate for Miami-Dade County Commission - District 3 which includes the communities of Liberty
City, Little Haiti, Overtown, the Upper East Side, Edgewater, Buena Vista, Allapattah, Wynwood, Venetian Causeway,
and Watson Island, all located within the City of Miami; Brownsville, Military Trail Park, Biscayne Shores, and Gardens
Park areas, the Village of El Portal and the Village of Miami Shores.
She is the wife of Mr. Peter Thomson and the mother of two wonderful daughters – Taylor and Paige McGhee. Her
